CONSULTANCY TO DEVELOP HISTORIC AND CURRENT CONNECTIVITY MAPS FOR CHIZARIRA NATIONAL PARK AND BUFFERING AREAS

1. Background

WWF Zimbabwe is implementing a “Wildlife restoration and community beneficiation project in Sebungwe Region”. The vision of the project is “thriving wildlife populations that benefit communities in the Sebungwe landscape of north western Zimbabwe”. The bulk of the project’s activities are in Chizarira National Park (CNP) and buffering zones of Binga and Gokwe districts. Ninety percent of the park Boundary is surrounded by communal areas of Binga and Gokwe districts.

The overall project objective is to improve wildlife numbers, corridor connectivity and ecological integrity for enhanced community food and nutrition security in selected parts of Sebungwe landscape. The project specifically intends to improve wildlife movement and habitat integrity between CNP and its buffer zones; as well as with HNP and MNP their buffer zones; promote integrated land use management at farm and sub-catchment levels in the buffer zones; and, incentivize buffer communities to be good custodians of wildlife and other natural resources.

2. Objectives

The main objective of the consultancy assignment is mapping of wildlife movements and zoning of major landscape use based on traditional knowledge and current observations. The consultant will develop historic and current corridor connectivity map for Chizarira and its buffer area.

3. Scope of assignment

To cover the objectives of the assignment, the consultant is expected to:-**

a. Develop study design that gathers information on historic and current movement of wildlife and major land use zoning in and around Chizarira National Park for approval by WWF Zimbabwe.

b. Conduct desktop and field research on major land use zones, the historic and current movement of wildlife in and around Chizarira National Park.

c. Conduct community informed review of historic and current wildlife movement against identified major land uses.

d. Produce a historic and current corridor connectivity report including relevant maps against major land uses for Chizarira and its buffer areas.

4. Deliverables

§ A major land use and corridor connectivity report with relevant maps for Chizarira and its buffer area based on local knowledge of historic and current observations.

5. Qualifications of the Consultant

§ A least a B.Sc. in Geography, Geo-informatics, Ecology, Natural Resources, Land Use Planning or related field.

§ At least 3 years of professional experience in conducting socio-economic surveys and landscape level mapping.

§ Excellent organization skills; Good oral and written communications skills.

§ Fluency in English, and local languages is an added advantage.

5. Duration and location of the assignment

It is anticipated that the consultancy will be for a maximum ten (10) days between May 2021 and July 2021. The consultancy will involve desktop work and field travel to Chizarira National Park and surrounding Areas.
