The ESSF is an overarching policy framework on environmental and social risk management, providing for:
- Identification and subsequent management and monitoring of E&S impacts, risks, and opportunities within the landscapes and seascapes that host WWF projects and programs
- Effective stakeholder engagement through consultation with local communities on matters that directly affect them and disclosure of project-related information via a new public portal.
Based in Fiji and reporting to the Regional Conservation Director, the ESSF Manger will manage all ESSF and risk management needs across Fiji, Solomon Islands and PNG Country Offices, not limited to the following:
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible as a focal point for the implementation of Environmental and Social Safeguard policies and measurements into WWF Pacific’s conservation programme to ensure a no harm principle is embedded in all works from policies to work on ground.
- Support the conservation teams on risk assessment to all project and programme implementation through identification of risk mitigation and management opportunities/strategies.
- Responsible for monitoring and reviewing the performance of the region’s landscapes and seascapes and the projects they host in accordance with ESSF requirements.
- Consistent liaison and reporting to WWF Asia Pacific & WWF International on ESSF-related progress, emerging issues and needs.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor degree (Master’s degree preferred) in social sciences and management, law, environmental management, economics and policies, social development, sociology, social anthropology, indigenous people’s studies or other relevant fields.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant international experience in the areas of E&S safeguard systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of indigenous people’s policy, development and implementation, social safeguards, development of guidance, references and tools related to indigenous peoples and social safeguards, design and monitoring of climate change and development programs, projects and activities, and advocacy and capacity development.
Competencies:
- Experience of working in international organizations, including multi-laterals or bilateral development agencies that operate similar systems.
- High degree of cultural sensitivity and ability to navigate complexity.
- Clear understanding of risk based approaches to managing projects and programs.
- Sound understanding of human rights and humanitarian law, and ability to apply human rights and humanitarian law frameworks to documentation.
- Ability to develop and facilitate participatory trainings and workshops and provide ongoing technical support to conservation team and relevant third parties.
- Clearly demonstrates behaviors aligned to the culture of WWF: Strive for Impact, Listen Deeply, Collaborate Openly and Innovate Fearlessly
- Identifies and aligns with the core values of the WWF organization: Courage, Integrity, Respect & Collaboration.
Remuneration: An attractive package shall be negotiated with the successful candidate based on their appropriate knowledge and skills. Contract duration is for 2 years depending on annual performance review and funding availability.
